Important Information

Blue Water Surrender partners with Vehicles for Charity to handle the vehicle donation process. Vehicles for Charity manages all steps involved, including scheduling the pickup, transferring the title, selling the vehicle, and issuing your donation acknowledgment. Each donation is reviewed individually, and not all vehicles may be accepted.

Questions Donors Often Ask

  • What types of vehicles can I donate?

Consider Donation accepts cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, fleet vehicles, trailers and even boats with a trailer. Vehicles do not have to be running; as long as they are tow-accessible and have at least three inflated tires, they can usually be accepted.

Vehicle donations are processed through Vehicles for Charity on behalf of Blue Water Surrender.

  • Do I need the vehicle to be drivable or in good condition?

No. Non-running vehicles are generally welcome. The car should have air in its tires and be accessible for the tow truck. Damaged vehicles may still be eligible, speak with a donation specialist if you have concerns at 1-866-628-CARS.

Eligibility review is handled by Vehicles for Charity.

  • Is a title required to donate my vehicle?

You should have a clear title at pickup. If your title is missing or not in your name, Vehicles for Charity can guide you through obtaining a duplicate or transferring ownership, depending on state rules. Call them at 1-866-628-CARS.

  • How is my tax deduction determined?

Under IRS rules, donors can claim the fair market value up to $500 if the vehicle sells for less than $500, or the sale price if it sells for more than $500. Vehicles for Charity issues the required IRS documentation within 30 days of sale.

  • What happens to my vehicle after it’s picked up?

The vehicle is sold wholesale to a licensed dealer or through a public auction. Dealers may dismantle non-running vehicles for parts and recycling, while auctioned vehicles might be resold at retail. 80% of the gross sale price goes directly to the charity, far exceeding the industry average.

  • How quickly can my vehicle be picked up, and do I need to be home?

Tow companies coordinated through Vehicles for Charity usually arrange pickup within a few days. Pickup is free of charge, and you do not need to be present as long as you leave the keys and title in the vehicle and remove personal belongings. Once the form is filled out they will contact you to schedule pickup.
